Marriage in Reverse

25.04.2008

In the new film What Happens in Vegas starring Ashton Kutcher and Cameron Diaz, two very different people are drawn together in an escapist desire while in Sin City. Except their night doesn't exactly stay in Vegas, but rather follows them back to New York and nearly destroys their lives and their sanity.

They've both been searching for love in all the wrong places, and although complete opposites, they seem to find exactly what their looking for in each other.

Diaz and Kutcher are an effective comedic duo, adding a sense of slapstick humour and charm to an otherwise standard romantic comedy. There aren't many surprises in this new film from director, Tom Vaughan, but if a light, funny film is all you're after, this definitely will satisfy. From their previous work, both stars are already loveable enough to carry the somewhat hard-to-believe plot.

Diaz plays Joy McNally, a high strung, overly worked business woman who needs to get away after being dumped by her fiancée. Her too-perfect ways led him to break up with her right in front of all their friends as they were waiting in hiding to surprise him for his birthday party.

Kutcher on the other hand, plays Jack Fuller, a non-committal goof ball that is coasting through life with no established direction. His lack of ambition comes from his fear of failure so he has consistently taken himself “out of the game,” only to find a new reason to play upon meeting Joy.

Of course besides the clubs and non-stop party scene there are the slot machines, and when Ashton wins $3 million using Cameron's coin, the stage is set for an all-out battle of the sexes. Because they are now wed, a judge, who is frustrated by the lack of respect towards marriage, forces them to try to make their marriage work in the name of the sacrament before they can claim their cash.

The two must attend marriage counselling to prove they are working on the relationship that neither of them intended to be in in the first place.
