The New Batman film, the Dark Knight has smashed US box office records by making $66.4million (£32 million) on its opening day.

The caped crusader toppled the previous high set by Spider Man 3 which made $59.8 million (£29.9 million.)

As the film continues to rake in rave reviews many UK cinemas are already sold out of seats for the release on Thursday.

While Christian Bale’s performance as Batman has garnered him praise critics are hailing Heath Ledger’s dark portrayal of the Joker as outstanding.
